Breastfeeding and Jaundice

Breastfeeding is not a cause of jaundice in newborns, but it can sometimes contribute to the condition. When a baby is born, their liver may take a few days to start functioning properly, and during this time, the baby's body may have trouble processing bilirubin, a substance that is produced when red blood cells break down. Breast milk jaundice occurs when certain substances in breast milk interfere with the breakdown of bilirubin, causing levels of bilirubin to rise.

Three Tips To Manage Breastfeeding

and Jaundice


Here are three tips for managing breastfeeding and jaundice:

  1. Ensure Adequate Feeding: Adequate feeding is crucial for managing jaundice in breastfed babies. Frequent feeding can help increase the amount of bilirubin excreted in bowel movements, which can help reduce bilirubin levels. Encourage your baby to feed often, at least 8-12 times in 24 hours, and ensure they are latching on correctly to ensure adequate milk transfer.

  2. Drink Enough Fluid: Mother are advisable to drink at least 3litre of water in order to stimulate milk production.

  3. Monitor Your Baby's Bilirubin Levels: It's important to monitor your baby's bilirubin levels, especially if they have jaundice. Your healthcare provider will likely recommend regular blood tests to monitor your baby's bilirubin levels and determine if any treatment is necessary. Follow their recommendations and ensure that you attend all appointments to ensure your baby is receiving the best possible care.
